Payback has absolutely flown in (Extreme Rules was less than a month ago) and the hectic PPV/Special Event schedule that WWE has of late is splitting fans down the middle – is it overkill or are WWE using them to drive the Network subs? Personally I love PPV sunday so any excuse for more wrestling is good with me:
Pre-Show: Tag Team Match: Axelmania & Macho Mandow Vs.The Ascension
The Ascension have made little impact thus far in their short WWE tenure apart from irking all the classic tag teams while blatantly wearing the Legion Of Doom‘s old cast off ring attire. That being said the team worked well at Full Sail and could see brighter things if handled correctly.
Macho Mandow and Curtis Axel have joined forces as the NEW Mega Powers to fight for the right of every WWE tag legend and Damien Sandow is magnificent in anything he does so it will be interesting to see if this newly formed tag team can get a win under their belts. It’s a shame this is relegated to the pre-show as this could be a perfect mid-card pick me up.
Prediction: Axelmania and Macho Mandow to run wild all over The Ascension
King Barrett Vs. Neville
Neville continues to impress – his recent match on RAW opposite John Cena, in particular, was a well-crafted and energetic bout – and WWE showed faith in him by not having Super Cena win clean, which can only be a good thing.
King Barrett is also one of the finest mid-card talents on the WWE roster at the moment and both competitors should be in the main event scene. Both possess good looks, technical ability and can work a crowd on both ends of the spectrum.
This is a hard one to call but Neville will steal the show with his acrobatic and surprisingly agile offence (for a man with his frame), but sadly I don’t think this will be enough to stop the Barrett Barrage and the North East Vs North West derby will see Preston and King Barrett victorious.
Prediction: King Barrett to take a win in this close fought bout
“I Quit” Match for the WWE United States Championship: John Cena (c) Vs.Rusev
The deciding bout in this long standing feud favours the man who never quits, John Cena, overcoming Rusev and his victory in the Russian Chain match and defending the championship week in, week out on RAW has surely set the outcome for this one.
The dissolution between Lana and Rusev is sure to be a factor in costing the super athlete this match and the best case scenario is we all push this aside and allow the WWE to continue to build Rusev as the monster heel he deserves to be.
Super Cena will throw everything but the kitchen sink at the Russian to stop him but the WWE Universe is under no illusion who will be the champ in this one.
Prediction: Cena to retain the United States Championship in an effort to validate it.
Divas Tag Team Match: Naomi & Tamina Snuka Vs. The Bella Twins
The WWE were smart to put the recently returned Tamina Snuka with Naomi as, while they are pushing her as a heel, she could still use some muscle behind her.
The Bellas – particularly Nikki Bella – are firmly over, so this loss wouldn’t be detrimental to their status on the roster, nor with the WWE Universe.
Tamina and Naomi are more in need of a win here and the best way to put them over would be a complete destruction of the Bellas.
Prediction: Tamina Snuka and Naomi to win
Dolph Ziggler Vs. Sheamus
After Sheamus piled on the heat in the Kiss Me Arse match these two have been at it like school kids; run ins, attacks and crazy shenanigans have kept this feud alive.
Sheamo is working well as a heel and his newly-adopted persona fits his brash, oft stiff ring work – the show off is sure to have plenty on his hands in this match.
Another beat-down from the Celtic Warrior would continue to have the fans against him and that’s the best thing that could happen. Dolph Ziggler always brings everything to the table and his spots are unnecessarily risky yet entertaining and as Sheamus is fond of saying, are we not entertained?
Sheamus will use underhanded tactics and sheer aggression to topple the fan favourite Ziggler, forcing this feud to continue for a few more weeks.
Prediction: Sheamus to win
2-out-of-3 Falls Tag Team Match for the WWE Tag Team Championship: The New Day (Big E and Kofi Kingston) (with Xavier Woods) (c) Vs. Tyson Kidd & Cesaro (with Natalya)
Tyson Kidd and Cesaro are one of the most entertaining tag teams in the division FACT! Dropping the titles to the obnoxious New Day was a smart move, but changing them to faces was not.
This should be a close to the bone match with Kidd/Cesaro getting first blood and having the New Day chase back to back pin-falls to retain the belts.
Prediction: The New Day to keep the tag titles
Ryback Vs. Bray Wyatt
All those cryptic promos were aimed at the clueless, jacked up Ryback? Wyatt is so much better than this; his magnetism is feeling a little pushed under the ring apron so to speak, and I’m not expecting a great deal from this encounter which will see the swamp dwelling weirdo best the enthusiastic but basic Ryback in a match which it’s hard to see past being filler.
Prediction: Wyatt really needs a win here, so hopefully he gets it
Fatal 4-Way Match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship: Seth Rollins (c) Vs. Roman Reigns Vs. Dean Ambrose Vs. Randy Orton
The addition of the Lunatic Fringe Dean Ambrose adds tenfold to an already interesting main event and, with Roman Reigns allowed a little more breathing room to naturally progress his character, he is settling down in singles competition so this should be an interesting match-up either way.
What better way to put him over than by having the rest of The Shield continue to carry him in a different role? Seth Rollins is a wonderful heel, his smarmy persona and J and J security work so perfectly and his feud with Randy Orton has been very entertaining.
Orton himself has seem rejuvenated since his return to in-ring action but once again it all comes back to that unstable element in this match; Dean Ambrose.
Ambrose will steal the show in a well earned and deserved title match. It would be perfect for him to win clean over former team mate Seth Rollins but the time isn’t ready to relinquish Rollins of the title.
This will be a hard-hitting battle between four men who each deserve their place at the top (some more than others) and it will be interesting to see if the familiarity of The Shield falls into place as everything seems firmly stacked against the Apex predator.
Prediction: Seth Rollins to retain the title in what could potentially be the highlight of the evening
